Lydia Venieri presents a visual narrative inspired by the myth of Selene and Endymion in the medieval Ballis Cellar on Tinos. Some works seem destined to wait for years before finding the perfect place to tell their story. Lydia Venieri’s Moonlight is one of them. From July 25 to September 20, 2026, the historic Ballis Cellar in Arnados, Tinos, will be transformed into a place of memory, myth, and contemplation, hosting the work for the very first time as a unique site-specific installation.

Within the labyrinthine chambers of the 13th-century cellar, 63 ceremonial banners unfold to create a visual poem: the artist’s personal interpretation of the ancient myth of the goddess Selene and her beloved young shepherd, Endymion. Selene watches helplessly as the vengeful gods condemn her mortal lover to an eternal sleep. Out
of her grief emerges a new power, one that transcends law and reason, allowing her to reign over an unseen, mystical world.

Created in 2002 and dedicated to the memory of Kimon Skasi, Moonlight has followed a remarkable journey. Ten years after his passing, it was published by Agra Publishers, and in 2007 it was transformed into a pioneering audiovisual artwork, conceived specifically as an application
for Apple’s iPhone. The proceeds from its distribution were donated to Amnesty International, giving the work an additional dimension of social engagement.

Thirty years later, Moonlight returns as an immersive installation, finding its ideal setting within the historic Ballis Cellar in Arnados. The stone walls, vaulted ceilings, subterranean passageways, and profound silence of the medieval space enter into a natural dialogue with the work, transforming the visitor’s journey into an experience that exists at the intersection of visual art, poetry, and myth.
