Kantilia

The lighting of Kantilia, a local custom in Tinos…

It is no coincidence that the lighting of Kantilia (oil-lamps) is a favorite habit of the residents of the “island with a thousand churches.”

Faith is deeply ingrained in the psyche of Tinians and is manifested in their everyday activities.

The ignition of oil-lamps is a moral duty and a promise always being kept. Many times it takes the form of a vow.

The owner of the chapel or the believer who wants to express his gratitude to the Saint, whose name is given to the chapel, promises to keep the holy candle always burning.

The candles should be lit at least every Saturday, on the eve and on the day of major Christian festivals and, of course, on the eve of the feast for the Saint, during the preparations for the feast.
