Although the “island of Aeolus” is famous for its “meltemi” wind (typical in mid-July – late August), there are always options to enjoy swimming with less or ideally no wind. According to the golden rule, when there is a strong northerly wind, the southern beaches, such as Agios Fokas (with the windbreaks in the organized ones, Agios Markos, Kalyvia, Agios Romanos, etc.) are more suitable. On the contrary, with a southerly wind, the beaches on the northern side (e.g. Kolymbithra and the beaches near Panormos) are ideal destinations. Of course, the angle from which the wind blows plays a decisive role and the rule can be overturned (e.g. Rohari or the small Kolymbithra are windless even with a strong northerly wind). So consult the details for each beach, ask the locals in the morning before you start, and find your ideal shelter depending on the weather.

All information is constantly updated for the summer of 2026, so that you have the most accurate input for each beach.
